Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Simon & Garfunkel – America

158 – Simon & Garfunkel – America (1968)
Written by Paul Simon
Produced by Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel and Roy Halee
Label – Columbia

One of Paul Simon’s greatest song writing achievements captures the optimism and hope of the fulfillment of the mythical American dream, and a dreamlike recollection of a road trip with then girlfriend, Kathy Chitty. The identity crisis he goes through towards the end of the song (“Kathy, I’m lost”,I said,Though I knew she was sleeping.”I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why,” reflects the hollow promise of some sense of worth and belonging that for many is simply unobtainable.

  1. I rarely think about their lyrics (I’m usually so focused on the melodies/harmonies) – but reading this, there’s another layer I’ve been missing out on!

  2. Nice song choice!
Hey I couldn’t find a contact page but I was wondering if you do reviews for indie artists.
I’m an independent musician trying to get my music reviewed,
    Here is my page: eliottb.bandcamp.com
If you decide to review kindly let me know and I’ll share in on my networks.
    Thanks for your time 🙂
