Whatever Happened To…? Maria Vidal (“Body Rock”)

Maria Vidal is an American singer who is best remembered for the international hit single “Body Rock” from 1984.

During the late 1970s, Vidal was a member of New York collective, Desmond Child And Rouge. They released two non charting long players on Capitol Records (“Desmond Child And Rouge”, and “Runners In The Night”). The group also provided a song to the soundtrack for “The Warriors” movie in 1979 (“Last Of An Ancient Breed”).

Here’s “Our Love Is Insane”:

In 1979, Vidal was invited by the group’s keyboardist Paul Shaffer to contribute to a live tour by Saturday Night Live star Gilda Radner. The shows would eventually result in a 1980 concert movie directed by Mike Nichols, titled “Gilda Live”.

Vidal signed a solo deal with EMI, and in 1984, recorded “Body Rock”, the theme for a movie directed by Marcelo Epstein. The Phil Ramone produced song would reach number 11 in the U.K. charts and be a significant hit internationally.

She appeared in the 1985 horror comedy film, “Once Bitten”, as a member of a high school band and contributed two songs to the soundtrack.

After being spotted by Jimmy Iovine, Vidal then signed to A&M Records and would go on to record and release her debut self titled long player in 1987. The album would contain two singles, “House Of Love” and “Do Me Right”.

Vidal has provided vocals for many popular artists, including Kiss’ Paul Stanley, Aerosmith, Seal, Alice Cooper, Celine Dion, Bette Midler, and Cher. Maria also appears on albums from Cat Stevens, and, most recently, Lana del Rey.

Her songwriting credits include co authoring Belinda Carisle’s 1990 hit single “Summer Rain”, and Ace Of Base’s 1999 single “Everytime It Rains”.

In 2009, Maria released her sophomore long player, titled “Living In Radical Radiance”, the record is on the Hen House Studios label.

Maria has produced a variety of vocal acts in the studio, including Carrie Underwood and the finalists on American Idol season 4, an Ethiopian Choir singing sacred songs, and the children’s record Little Dolphins by the Sea.

Maria resides in Hampstead, UK, and also owns property in Los Angeles CA with her husband Rick Nowels and their son.

  1. Dance til you drop! Amazing… haven’t heard that song in about, well, a long time. I think it may have been on an 80s compilation that my sister had / has.
