162 – Pet Shop Boys Featuring Dusty Springfield – What Have I Done To Deserve This? (1987)
Written by Neil Tennant, Chris Lowe and Allee Willis
Produced by Stephen Hague
Label – Parlophone

Neil Tennant was and still probably is, a huge fan of Dusty. The song was composed with the queen of white soul in mind, and when she came out of relative obscurity to perform on this 1987 single, it was like the Heaven’s had aligned for the perfect pop single. “What Have I Done To Deserve This” feels like two songs spliced together, as Tennant’s doleful tones are complemented by Dusty’s velvet rise and fall. It still stands as one of the greatest vocal duets.

  1. I don’t know much of their stuff, and I’ve never really been drawn to them, but I always quite liked this one. Forgot that Dusty appeared on it!
