Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Elvis Costello – Watching The Detectives

164 – Elvis Costello – Watching The Detectives (1977)
Written by Elvis Costello
Produced by Nick Lowe
Label – Stiff/Columbia

The imagery that’s conjured up by a single line (“She’s filing her nails while they’re dragging the lake”) propels Costello’s vast poetic skill. Inspired by an obsession with The Clash’s version of “Police And Thieves”, this white reggae classic, jerks around like a caffeine induced high, which of course it was. Elvis wrote the song in the early hours of the morning, having just ingested a jar of coffee. Rock ‘n roll excess in its most inspired form.

  1. A staggeringly great 45, wonderful song, all the tension of a Hitchcock masterpiece and a production so hard that you could rollerskate on it.
And yes, Hackskeptic, that IS a killer line from a lovely lyric.
