In Profile: U2 (1989)

On February 1st Roy Orbison’s posthumous studio album, “Mystery Girl” is released. “She’s A Mystery To Me”, written by Bono and The Edge would be released as a supporting single.

On March 6th The Edge travels to Moscow in support of Greenpeace.

In late April, the band release “When Love Comes To Town”, featuring blues guitarist B.B. King. The single reaches the U.K. to ten, but stalls at 68 in the U.S. chart.

On May 10th Bono and Ali’s first child, Jordan, is born on Bono’s 29th birthday.

June 12th sees the release of a fourth and final single from “Rattle And Hum”, “All I Want Is You”. It reaches number 4 in the U.K., number 83 in the U.S.

On August 6th Adam Clayton made headlines after two undercover cops busted him for possession of a small amount of marijuana in Dublin. To avoid conviction, the judge allowed him to make a “donation” of £25,000 to the Dublin Women’s Aid Refugee Center.

21st September saw the start of The Lovetown Tour. 10 weeks would be spent with shows in Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

The band finished off the year playing shows in Germany, The Netherlands, France and between 26 – 31st December, The Point Depot, Dublin.

On their 30th December show, Bono announces “this is just the end of something for U2” and that “we have to go away and … and dream it all up again”.

The New Years Eve show the band open with “Where The Streets Have No Name” as the audience counts down the last seconds of the 1980s. The show is played live on radio throughout Europe.
