168 – Tracy Chapman – Fast Car (1988)
Written by Tracy Chapman
Produced by David Kershenbaum
Label – Elektra

Chapman’s classic contribution is one rarely heard in popular music, in that she brought a uniquely black and feminist perspective to acoustic folk rock’s generally white, middle class audience. This is also a song that resonates with anyone who goes through hard times, and dreams of an unlikely escape.

  1. You know, this has been in the busker’s songbook for so long that I think I’m tired of it. But it’s only the versions of it I’m tired of. It’s a helluva song… her performance is incredible.
