U2 1988 Rattle & Hum 10

1988 would be a significant year for U2, with Grammy awards, the release of a double album and a movie.

In February the band relocated to Los Angeles to continue work with Director Phil Joanou for the forthcoming “Rattle And Hum” movie. Whilst in L.A. a selection of songs were recorded for the album.

March 2nd sees the band win 2 Grammy awards, with “The Joshua Tree” winning best album, and a further award for best pop duo or group.

On March 7th, “One Tree Hill” is released as a single exclusively in New Zealand. It reaches number one.

During May, the band return to Dublin to continue work on the album and movie. “Van Diemen’s Land” and “Desire” are captured on film.

In June, the band return to Los Angeles to finish work on the “Rattle And Hum” soundtrack.

On August 23rd, “Folkways: A Vision Shared – A Tribute to Woody Guthrie & Leadbelly” is released. The album is a compilation of Guthrie and Leadbelly songs recorded by various well known artists. U2 perform Guthrie’s 1940 song “Jesus Christ”.

September 26th sees the release of the single “Desire” from “Rattle And Hum”. It becomes the first U.K. number one for the band.

On October 10th and 11th, “Rattle And Hum” is released to the public. It would reach the top of the charts in many countries, including U.S.A, Canada, U.K., and Australia.

Here’s The Hackskeptic’s review of “Rattle And Hum”

The world premiere of the documentary movie “Rattle And Hum” is showcased on October 27th. The movie is set for general release on November 4th.

In November, The Edge would appear on stage to support Brian Ferry’s RDS Arena show.

On December 17th, “Angel Of Harlem” is released as a single. It makes the top ten in both the U.K. and U.S.
