Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Doves – There Goes The Fear

186 – Doves – There Goes The Fear (2002)
Written by Jez Williams, Jimi Goodwin and Andy Williams
Produced by Doves
Label – Heavenly

Whether you choose the single or the seven minute album version, “There Goes The Fear” is a meteoric song of enchanting intricacy and careful arrangement. To combine post punk guitars with South American rhythms, an anthemic pop chorus and this could have worked out wildly overcooked. Doves achieved their masterstroke in their stride and the album this song was pulled from(“The Last Broadcast”) really is one of the greatest collections of this century.

  1. Oh man, this is a great tune. Very high up on my list of faves. Blows my mind every time. And I was just thinking the other day that these guys need to get back together to record and tour.

    • I agree! I think that in terms of intelligent alternative pop/rock this band often get overshadowed by fellow Mancunians Elbow. Personally I think Doves are better.

  2. It took me about 10 years to really appreciate the Doves, but I got into them in a pretty big way a few years ago. One of those bands that I was weary of due to the hype and I just never really got it at the time… haven’t listened to them in a couple of years, but this is a great tune. One of their best.

    • They are great IMO, particularly considering that they transferred themselves from a chart dance band (Sub Sub) to a well regarded alternative rock band.
