Unfortunately, Teenage Fanclub are always cast as rock/pop underachievers, which is a tad unfair really. It wasn’t their fault that they have been so criminally overlooked, when frankly, most of their back catalogue is a wonderfully rough around the edges distillation of The Byrds, Big Star and The Beach Boys. For any lover of power pop, “Sparky’s Dream” ticks every box and more for its opening rush of summer sun and sweet rising harmonies.

  1. “Criminally overlooked” is putting it lightly. It’s like they forever paid for “Bandwagonsque” being ranked higher than “Nevermind” on most of the end of 1991 lists. I love the Fannies.

    • I think you’ve nailed it JP. I remember Spin magazine proudly announcing it as their number one record of the year and I thought WTF? I mean it’s great and all that, but for such a high accolade it has to be more than just simply great.
