Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Manic Street Preachers – If You Tolerate This

218 – Manic Street Preachers – If You Tolerate This (1998)
Written by Nick Jones, James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore
Produced by Dave Eringa
Label – Epic

Given that chief lyricist Richey Edwards was lost, seemingly never to be found, it’s extraordinary that The Manics continued to create such astounding number one singles. Who would have thought that a song describing Welsh nationals volunteering to fight the fascists in the Spanish Civil War would carry such meaning to the Great British public? Maybe there’s a sense that the lines warning that oppressive dictatorship is never far away, and this must have resonated back in 1998, and in reality still does today. As a Brit living in the U.S. I have that uncomfortable feeling of a darkness looming over the land I now call home.
