240 – The Mama’s And The Papa’s – California Dreamin’ (1965)
Written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips
Produced by Lou Adler
Label – Dunhill

Written during a bitterly cold New York winter, “California Dreamin'” is one of the sunniest pop songs ever recorded. Superb harmonies, an excellent Alto Flute solo and a spare arrangement from Lou Adler which highlights the vocal melody as the star attraction.

  1. When I was in high school, we used this song to soundtrack a photography project/slide show we did, taking for its subject a long abandoned and graffiti ridden house. Take from that what you will but that’s what this song always reminds me of. Sunshine indeed.

  2. Hi. I’m obviously weird because this is December to music for me. Outstanding harmonies of course, oozing the 60’s, but overwhelmingly Christmassy.

    Incredibly sad,too.

    Lovely and warming.
