248 – The Beach Boys – California Girls (1965)
Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love
Produced Brian Wilson
Label – Capitol

The complexities of being Brian Wilson leads one to constantly wonder how the heck he could possibly manage to write, produce and record such outstanding songs? The constant battle with his father over creativity, the difficulty facing up to live performances, his mental fragility and experimentation with LSD. All catalysts to songs like “California Girls”, a breakthrough in that it’s tightly harmonized, mid tempo, and a world away from the surf music they had built their commercial reputation on.

  1. And so it came to pass that the undisputed ugliest band ever , (you can breathe again now, A flock of seagulls), wrote a classic beach tune in worship of the one thing they’d never get through looks alone. It’s bloody brilliant though. Mid 60’s middle American perfection. You’ll believe you can surf! 10/10 *****

  2. Hi, I’m writing about every song that ever became a #1 hit, backwards chronologically, in the journey that is the Every Number One blog. I would really appreciate if you took a look around.
