Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Queen – Somebody To Love

261 – Queen – Somebody To Love (1976)
Written by Freddie Mercury
Produced by Queen
Label – EMI

As Brian May confirmed, Mercury wanted to be Aretha Franklin, and “Somebody To Love” is typically inspired by her. What is so fascinating is the similar arrangement to “Bohemian Rhapsody” with multi tracked guitar and vocal harmonies. The combination of May, Taylor and Mercury performing an epic stab at Gospel, and Freddie’s complex melodies and time signals make this one of their most popular recordings, and justifiably so. It’s also his favourite composition and undoubtedly his best vocal performance.

    • Agreed, the song was the perfect platform for Freddie to deliver a gusto live performance. I have to admit that George Michael honored the song really well too.
