264 – Martha & The Vandellas – Heatwave (1963)
Written by Holland, Dozier and Holland
Produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier
Label – Gordy

This glorious gospel performance from Martha, Rosalind and Annette paves the way for the Motown sound for the remainder of the decade and beyond. A thumping rhythm from sticks man Richard Allen, and a precise double bass rhythm from James Jameson are the unsung instrumental heroes and a textbook sax solo from Mike Terry is the sweet cherry on top. An incredible achievement, magically pulled together by Holland, Dozier, Holland, and of course Berry Gordy Jr.
