269 – Rufus & Chaka Khan – Ain’t Nobody (1983)
Written by Hawk Wolinski
Produced by Russ Titelman
Label – Warner Bros

As conventional disco beat out its final breath before the oncoming synth and machine beat generation claimed the glitter ball, Rufus, a band that had been around for 13 years created their swansong and a most spectacular moment before finally taking a bow that very same year. Chaka Khan’s vocal is as emotional, sexual and exultant as anything from the era. Her rising “oh,oh,oh,oh” before the chorus feels almost coital in its delivery. If this song doesn’t turn the downstairs lights on, then nothing ever will.
