Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Madness – Our House

madness

284 – Madness – Our House (1982)
Written by Chris Foreman and Cathal Smyth
Produced by Alan Winstanley and Clive Langer
Label – Stiff/Geffen

This nostalgic jaunt to happier times was the nutty boys’ only top 10 hit in the U.S. It’s a perfect example of how Madness could tap into social conscience by reminiscing moments that occur in all our lives. Add to that the most upbeat and insistent melody, Mike Barson’s thudding piano accompaniment and a generous string embellishment and the conclusion is simple. The reason this was such a huge hit Stateside is that it was the best song they ever released. Simple as that.
