Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Abba – SOS

286 – Abba – SOS (1975)
Written by Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Stig Anderson
Produced by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson
Label – Polar/Epic/Atlantic

“SOS” is the point at which one realizes that Abba were more than just a shallow Euro pop carnival act. The song has a depth and maturity that led the likes of John Lennon, Ray Davies and Pete Townshend to extol its merits. With the classically influenced motif, and Agnetha’s sad delivery, it’s hard to deny the band were a prodigious pop talent.

    • Me too. As a teen it was so un-cool to admit a liking for Abba. Nowadays, I appreciate them as great pop writers and performers.
