Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Danny Wilson – Mary’s Prayer

298 – Danny Wilson – Mary’s Prayer (1987)
Written by Danny Wilson
Produced by Dave Bascombe and Glenn Skinner
Label – Virgin

A wonderfully rich and sophisticated diversion from the fairlight mulch and machine rhythms prevalent in 1987. Famously championed by Mike Bone, the head of promotions at rival label Elektra who declared “Mary’s Prayer is my life”. Virgin records reacted swiftly with a full page ad in Rolling Stone prompting buyers to “Do Mike Bone a favor, add Danny Wilson”. Just two sweet albums and a quiet goodbye from this underrated three piece was sadly never enough to satisfy this listener. Simply beautiful.
