Although largely forgotten by most, Big Star had a huge influence on rock music of the later decade and into the 80s. Their original brand of harmonic power pop was the logical progression from the British invasion of beat music that had arrived in the U.S. a decade before. Music critic and writer John Borack perfectly summarised the song in his book “Shake Some Action – The Ultimate Guide To Power Pop”, stating that “September Gurls was and is the sine qua non of power pop; a glorious, glittering jewel with every facet cut and shined to absolute perfection”.
