“You never close your eyes anymore, when I kiss your lips”. What an opening line! It says everything about a dying love and Bill Medley’s bass vocal emphasises the heartache brilliantly. It’s funny the little stories you glean from the creation of such a vital pop single. For example, Phil Spector refused to edit the song down to suit the strict time constraints of pop radio stations, so he deliberately arranged for the 7″ label to read 3:05. Medley’s partner Bobby Hatfield reportedly expressed his annoyance to Spector upon learning that he would have to wait until the chorus to sing. When Hatfield asked Spector just what he was supposed to do during Medley’s solo, Spector replied: “You can go straight to the fucking bank.”
