339 – Glen Campbell – Wichita Lineman (1968)
Written by Jimmy Webb
Produced by Al DeLory
Label – Capitol
BBC radio DJ and music aficionado Stuart Maconie describes “Wichita Lineman” as the greatest pop song ever written. High praise, and indeed it is an incredible song. Campbell’s underrated country croon has a lonely timbre, and allied with the orchestration, just milks even more emotion from the lyrics. In addition a rare baritone guitar solo pitched somewhere between a bass and guitar sound adds to the sombre cloud that lays thickly over the lineman’s sad yearning for the love of his life.
