Bathory
Formed 1983: Stockholm Sweden

Bathory were one of the pioneers of the first wave of black metal as well as viking metal. When Quorthon formed the band in 1983, his nickname was originally Black Spade. He soon changed it to Ace Shoot, then finally to Quorthon, a name he found on a list of demons. Quorthon died of a heart attack on June 3, 2004 in his apartment in Hässelby, Stockholm. “Ace Börje Forsberg” was the name written on Quorthon’s obituary, but his real birth name was Tomas. If someone asked him the real name he always gave invented ones: Runka Snorkråka (Wanked snot), Pär Vers (a wordplay, means perverted), Fjärt Bengrot (Fart Bengrot), Folke Ostkuksgrissla, and Fnoret.

Burzum is the musical project of Norwegian musician and writer Varg Vikernes. Vikernes began making music in 1988, but it was not until 1991 that he recorded his first demos as Burzum. The word “burzum” means “darkness” in the Black Speech, a fictional language crafted by J. R. R. Tolkien. The project became a part of the early Norwegian black metal scene and one of the most influential acts in black metal.
