343 – Talk Talk – Life’s What You Make It (1985)
Written by Mark Hollis and Tim Friese-Green
Produced by Tim Friese-Green
Label – EMI/Parlophone

Mark Hollis and his band Talk Talk were deft exponents of subtle, sensitive, and yet seemingly effortless song arrangements. “Life’s What You Make It” is a perfect example of a simple tune organically amplified into a devastatingly passionate epic. From the tribal rhythm and piano bass lead, Hollis’ hopeful lyric is delivered like he’s pleading for some kind of response. The corresponding video is so ENGLISH you can almost smell the pine cones, bluebells and lavender. It’s rare for beauty to be so thoroughly unassuming.
