350 – Suzanne Vega – Luka (1987)
Written by Suzanne Vega
Produced by Steve Addabbo and Lenny Kaye
Label – A&M

Vega’s deeply touching ballad is masterly in its speculative poetic skill. Neither confirming Luka’s abuse or casting opinion she leaves the listener to formulate their own conclusions. It’s brilliantly conveyed in almost hushed tones by the singer, as if to emphasise the sense of secrecy and inner fear for the victim.
