351 – The Ruts – West One (Shine On Me) (1980)
Written by The Ruts
Produced by Tony Wilson & The Ruts
Label – Virgin

Recorded just a few months before the death of front man Malcolm Owen from a heroin overdose, this moving epic to alienation, embittered loneliness and chemical dependency sums up how the singer’s fight was ebbing away. His band mates (along with saxophonist Gary Barnacle) deliver a diversely uplifting attack that embodies their roots in a glorious cacophony of punk, rock and dub. It’s a fitting finale to Owen’s brief, but dazzling career.
