Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: The Supremes – Where Did Our Love Go

360 – The Supremes – Where Did Our Love Go (1964)
Written by Holland/Dozier/Holland
Produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier
Label – Motown

No one can deny the value of this recording, particularly given that The Supremes had released several singles before this that were at best, modestly received. Significantly, the single is deliberately slower in pace and pushes Diana Ross’ vocal range a key lower than she was accustomed to, making for a more dusky, sultry delivery. The vocal harmonies were the most complex the girls had ever attempted as they swelled above the brightly laid handclaps and foot stomps. It’s the song that made The Supremes a worldwide sensation, and from being a far distant third in the pecking order for choice of songs behind Martha & The Vandellas and The Marvelettes, they immediately became the centre stage attraction for the remainder of the decade.
