Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Derek And The Dominos – Layla

365 – Derek And The Dominos – Layla (1971)
Written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon
Produced by Tom Dowd and Derek And The Dominos
Label – Atco/RSO/Polydor

The desperation in Eric Clapton’s voice is self evident as he calls out for the un-requited love of George Harrison’s wife, Patti Boyd. The driving riff is dagger like as the dual guitars joust for attention and Jim Gordon’s piano coda for the second act plays out like the soundtrack for an Aristotelian influenced romantic tragedy. The moving instrumental allied with some gifted guitar playing makes for an astonishing single that defines the classic rock genre.
