Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Suede – Beautiful Ones

369 – Suede – Beautiful Ones (1996)
Written by Brett Anderson and Richard Oakes
Produced by Ed Buller
Label – Nude

When guitarist and co writer Bernard Butler ditched the band after “Dog Man Star”, one wondered how Brett Anderson would recover, particularly given that the album was a commercial disappointment. Richard Oakes, a 17 year old who happened to send a demo via the Suede fan club was appointed Butler’s replacement and quickly integrated into the vacant slot. A re-invigorated Anderson, along with Oakes set to work in unison on an album (“Coming Up”) that was more cohesive, fresher and with lyrical themes that spitefully swipes at the celebrity lifestyle. “The Beautiful Ones” is the culmination of their new found vigour and remains a superb single.
