Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Prince – When Doves Cry

372 – Prince – When Doves Cry (1984)
Written by Prince
Produced by Prince
Label – Warner Bros

Written in just two hours, this stark reminder of Prince’s power to generate dynamic singles whilst having the confidence to radically alter a normally vital constituent of the song. Originally recorded with a bass line, to add to the sense of icy introspection he pulled it from the final mix, leaving just a cold Linn drum beat and spare synth accompaniment. Whether the story is auto biographical or not remains a mystery and matters little. Mere explanations can’t escape the genius of the song as the singer stabs musical ice shards into your heart and head.
