Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: King Crimson – 21st Century Schizoid Man

KingCrimson

382 – King Crimson – 21st Century Schizoid Man (1969)
Written by Peter Sinfield
Produced by King Crimson
Label – Atlantic

The incredible thing is that this song still sounds like it was released last week, and lyrically is still as relevant now as it was in 1969. On first listen it really is a frightening experience, such is the powerful intensity of the instrumentation allied with Greg Lake’s machine like rant. The song develops into a free form jazz exploration that’s both menacing and amazing. Some commentators cite this as a seminal record in the development of progressive rock. They may be right, but for this reviewer it’s just an immensely arresting song.
