Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel – Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)

388 – Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel – Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) (1975)
Written by Steve Harley
Produced by Steve Harley and Alan Parsons
Label – EMI

The song was apparently written at 4.00AM in the morning and with the help of a bottle of brandy, Steve Harley venomously spits lyrical bullets to the original Cockney Rebel line up that left him in 1974. Odd really because I’m sure most of the record buying public were bought in by the suggestive chorus. Jim Cregan’s excellent flamenco styled solo adds the Latin flavour, and the pauses between chorus and verse add an unusual sense of expectation. It’s undoubtedly one of the great number one British pop singles.
