Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Portishead – Glory Box

399 – Portishead – Glory Box (1995)
Written by Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons, Adrian Utley and Isaac Hayes
Produced by Portishead and Adrian Utley
Label – Go! Discs/London

Occasionally in this wonderful world of music you get blown over by something so incredibly original it bewilders, excites and eventually forms a listening habit that’s hard to escape. Goodness knows how Geoff Barrow and co. could so adeptly combine the 60s TV theme for Robinson Crusoe with an Isaac Hayes sample, and then add some very modernistic trip hop rhythms and still make something as enchanting as this. Top that with Beth Gibbons’ smoky tones and there you have it! One of the most bewildering and yet stunning singles of the century.
