Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Elvis Costello – Alison

401 – Elvis Costello – Alison (1977)
Written by Elvis Costello
Produced by Nick Lowe
Label – Stiff

This gentle paced country tinged classic is a far cry from future Costello recordings but is nonetheless vital in understanding his song writing skill and attention to lyrics that intrigue long after the needle’s left the groove. There’s two opinions hidden within the words of “Alison”. One is that it is quite simply a lament for lost love, and the other that its the scorn of an angry lover who has murderous intent for the subject of the song. Who knows? It’s still a blistering single and one of Costello’s best recordings.
