Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: The Monkees – Daydream Believer

403 – The Monkees – Daydream Believer (1967)
Written by John Stewart
Produced by Chip Douglas and The Monkees
Label – Colgems

“Daydream Believer” would be the last major hit for The Monkees and also marks the end of an era. From this point on the group would take greater control of their output, both visually and sonically. The innocence of youth and the prospect of responsibility weigh heavily in the lyrics and although joyous, probably reflect The Monkees feelings that they had reached a plateau and needed an opportunity to develop a career on their own terms. It almost worked, and this single remains a timeless bookend that still sounds surprisingly fresh today as it did in 1967.
