420 – Beastie Boys – Sabotage (1994)
Written by Beastie Boys
Produced by Beastie Boys/Mario Caldato Jr.
Label – Grand Royal Records

When Beastie Boys released this chaotic, mesmerising single in 1994, music pundits had to create a new sub genre just to identify it. And so, the first Rapcore record with an accompanying homage to 70s cop shows video crashed into our lives and the New York trio cemented their place as audacious rap visionaries. What holds everything together in this smash and grab, energy laden surge of pulsating aural shock therapy is MCA’s distinctly distorted bass lick and the frantic turntable scratches. Original and memorable in equal measure.
