Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Nirvana – Heart Shaped Box (1993)

428 – Nirvana – Heart Shaped Box (1993)
Written by Kurt Cobain
Produced by Steve Albini
Label – DGC

However hard he tried to deny himself in his song writing, Kurt Cobain couldn’t escape from pop melodies, and “Heart Shaped Box” is one of his melancholic best. Some argue it’s Nirvana’s greatest single and quite frankly it’s difficult to argue with that view. Whether it’s an ode to his relationship with Courtney Love or a sad lament to child cancer (or both) we’ll never know, but the tenderness of the verse and the sheer brutality of the chorus is hard to resist.
