Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs – The Lotus Eaters – The First Picture Of You (1983)

437 – The Lotus Eaters – The First Picture Of You
Written by Peter Coyle,Jeremy Kelly & Gerard Quinn
Produced by Nigel Gray
Label – Arista

According to legend, when late night BBC DJ John Peel hosted this band for a session, the subsequent recording created a mammoth stir amongst record companies fighting for the band’s signature. Arista won, but the only return for their investment was this elegant mid tempo ballad. At a time when wimp pop was perfectly acceptable “The First Picture Of You” was undoubtedly better than anything before or after. Upbeat, with a breathy innocense and freshness that’s hard to ignore, Peter Coyle and co. drifted in on a gentle summer breeze and then floated away whilst “The flowers screamed their joy”.
