Hackskeptic’s 500 Greatest Songs: Kid Creole & The Coconuts – Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy

499 – Kid Creole & The Coconuts – Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy (1982)
Written By – August Darnell
Produced By – August Darnell
Label – Island

Modelling himself as a Latino version of Cab Calloway, August Darnell was an odd figure amongst the hit makers of the early 80s. To his credit he knew exactly how to mould Latin and Caribbean music with disco and funk rhythms and create sprightly 3 minute singles. This is as good an example of his floor filling skill as any, but the biting lyrics draw the attention. Darnell is cast as the hard hearted man bluntly informing a young girl that he is not her father. Not only does he clearly emphasise her mother’s indiscretion, but in addition stuns the girl with the cruelest line (“See if I was in your blood, then you wouldn’t be so ugly”). It’s an amazing example of how callous words can be shrouded by up beat dance music.

They say that all is fair in love and war
And child believe it
When mama stayed in Saint Tropez
She had a fall or two

And I’m telling it to you straight
So you don’t have to hear it in another way
Oh Annie, I’m not your daddy
Oh Annie, I’m not your daddy

They say that out of sight is out of mind
And child believe it
Your mama was in search of love
But all she got was used

And I’m telling it to your face
So you don’t have to hear it in another place
(Break it to me gently now
Don’t forget I’m just a child)
Oh Annie, I’m not your daddy
(Mama’s baby’s papa’s baby)
Oh Annie, I’m not your daddy
(Mama’s baby’s papa’s baby)

See if I was in your blood
Then you wouldn’t be so ugly

Yes I’m telling it to you straight
So you don’t have to hear it in another way
(Break it to me gently now
Don’t forget I’m just a child)
Oh Annie, I’m not your daddy
(Mama’s baby’s papa’s baby)
Oh Annie, I’m not your daddy
(Mama’s baby’s papa’s baby)

  1. outstanding 80’s pop; style over content is nothing when there’s no content- Darnell maintains both by the shovel-full. Good choice, Hackskeptic. I’m off to dig out my copies of Smash Hits!!
