Isley Brothers inspired lead guitar, Sex Pistol Paul Cook on Vibraphone, and backing rhythms that sounded like they had been recorded on technology from 30 years before, “A Girl Like You” is a bizarre amalgamation of Collins’ off the wall pop concepts. From the deliberately dumb lyric of the verse, who else could detail the listener with a chorus that included the lines “You’ve made me acknowledge the devil in me, hope to God I’m talking metaphorically, hope that I’m talking allegorically, know that I’m talking about the way I feel”? Bonkers pop music at its very best.
